About Us

“Awana Foods, derived from the Oshiwambo word for “enough,” seeks to address the issue of hunger and food waste in Namibia and across Africa. Worldwide, approximately 30% of all food produced is wasted before reaching the consumer, with Sub-Saharan Africa seeing a higher rate of 37%. This waste leads to significant financial losses for farmers and wasted resources. At the same time, 100 million people in Africa face extreme food insecurity, with about 40.2 million in Central and Southern Africa.

Challenges such as inadequate transport networks, economic downturns, and disruptions caused by the COVID-19 pandemic make food producers more vulnerable to waste and spoilage. Meanwhile, food shortages persist in both rural and urban areas. Awana Foods aims to bridge the gap between food surplus and scarcity by sourcing excess and B-grade produce from small-holder farmers. By adding value through methods that extend shelf life and reduce storage needs, Awana Foods helps preserve the nutritional value of food, making it more accessible while minimizing waste.

The company produces items like teas, concentrate syrups, dried fruits, and powders to address these challenges.”
